did I show this picture of my sweetheart....

Song of the Day: Making Pies by Patty Griffin on the album 1,000 Kisses.

Man, what a good call Molly. However, when she sings that line "Did I show you this picture of my sweetheart?" it's kind of hard to not tear up. "At my sister's house last Sunday , this is Monday and I'm making pies....." Enjoy.

Washington DC- Washington City Paper features Rosemont

Last week Sadie Dingfelder featured The Rosemont Family Reunion for the ONE TRACK MIND column focused on local DC music. Besides misunderstanding that 'Evans' is part of Kyle's double name (smiles), She wrote:

One Track Mind
From the September 8, 2006 issue, page 47.
Forever Ruth
The Rosemont Family Reunion
By Sadie Dingfelder
Standout Track: No. 6, "Julia," a sorrowful waltz featuring Kyle Evans, 25, singing like an old man reminiscing about a young love. Only a quiet acoustic guitar and a melodica adorn the wistful lyrics: "My canter, your stride, as the fire slowly dies/We'll dance, we'll dance, Julia."

Musical Motivation: Evans' creative reserves hit empty midway through recording Forever Ruth. "I was working odd hours in the basement, there were extension cords everywhere—it was just a total disaster," he says. To get away from the chaos, Evans headed to Morocco with two roommates from his Columbia Heights group house. On a layover in Paris, at 4 a.m., the friends happened upon an old man playing a melodica in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral. "The sound of it just really resonated with me," says Evans.

The singer continued on to Morocco, but that reedy tune had lodged in his mind. One day, as he sat watching a fire burn in Marrakech's city square, inspiration struck. In an hour, he'd penned a song about a woman waltzing against the backdrop of a burning movie set.

DEUS EX MELODICA: Though Evans worried that the soothing song would put audiences to sleep, "Julia" turned out to be a crowd favorite during his band's recent East Coast tour. He gives all the credit to the melodica, an ungainly instrument that looks like a cross between a keyboard and a kazoo. "We like to call it the dork-o-phone," he says. "When we bust that out, everyone yells and screams and hoots and hollers." —Sadie Dingfelder

Fall in Washington

Rainy days and falling leaves are making this woman happy. Walking Ivy is less like swimming in a swamp and more of a joy.

And, the fact that JR scored me a ticket to Wilco at the 9:30 Club in October is pretty lovely as well.

... Big Hillbilly Bluegrass at Madam's Organ with Mike on the Banjo last night... the Whigs in town on Monday night at the Blackcat... Rogue Wave tonight at the Blackcat....Nya Jade at Grog and Tankard in Georgetown last night.... The Potato Famine at Adam's Morgan Day on Sunday... and Orquestre Ashe at Duke's City last friday night....

its a good time to be in the district!

We also had a blast meeting and playing with The Bridges and The Modern Skirts this past Saturday down in Atlanta. What talented youngins! Check them out (www.myspace.com/thebridgesmusic) and (www.myspace.com/modernskirts.... I'd start with the tune "Pasadena"). It was eeeeeeery driving back home to DC on 395N across the 14th Street bridge at 3am (technically the early early morning of September 11th) and seeing at least 15 spotlights exuding up into the sky from the center of the Pentagon...in remembrance. With all the windows in the Jeep down and nobody on the highway, or in the pentagon parking lot, but all the lights on inside the building and this massive illumination coming from the center over a town fast asleep. Wild.

Song of the Day: India Arie (Constitution Hall Oct 4th by the way) "Better People" YEAH! (You'll know what I mean when you go download it! It's great... little funky freedom song) And in this vein, I helped my banjo teacher create a MySpace account for himself (BanjoManFC) and he taught me how to pick the old traditional piece I've had such trouble with "Whiskey Before Breakfast". Cheesy? yes. But I was inspired:)

India Arie lyrics from "Better People"
"We went from radio to TV
Now we're going from LP to CD
Don't be afraid

To try something new
I can help you with the brand new technology
Help me with the age old philosophy
Together there's so much we can do with:

Young People, who talk to
Old People, it would make us
Better People, all around...

And if Old People would talk to
Young People, it would make us
Better People, all around....

They say that every
Generation gets worse
Whether if your generous or no purse

These problems tend to strive off the sky (yeah)
Listen to Mahatma Ghandi's words
Be the change you want to see in the world
Start with yourself and healing will multiply
AAAAAAH, that's what happens When..

If black people
Would talk to white people
It would make us
Better People
All Around....

If Republican people would
Talk to Democratic people
It would make us diplomatic people
[laugh] All Around....."

late nights in August...

It's late here on the East Coast and Molly just got on the BART train in San Francisco. We just got off the phone, rambling about gentle-boys and politics, what have you... while she had 14 minutes til the BART train arrived in Oakland.

Why am I not in San Francisco I ask you? Because I love my famiy in Georgia and the Crack Shack and the variety of trees in the Southeast and the District and the promixity to Highlands, NC as well as NYC. The dog is asleep and I've just returned from my most favorite live show in DC thus far..hands down!... "The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band" at Jammin Java in Northern Virginia. We just got a gig there, and I've been following these cats for awhile. Watching the" Reverand Peyton's Big Damn Band" feels like you just walked into "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" in all the right ways. You just can't believe that young, attractive, talented, folks like this even exist anymore! It's beautiful and made my month!! We MUST have these folks play with us! Check them out www.bigdamnband.com/

They remind me of Dad and Fiddler's Grove...the rebel side of Fiddler's Grove, and by rebel I do NOT mean the Flag, but instead the musicians you want to hang out with by the camp fire all night, who are not mennonites with many children by the age of 16, but ramblers who's nomadic life you could scarcley imagine. They do not have a place of residency....just a van...and gigs. I am not so sure I could do that. yet............

Song of the week...month.................................... it's been awhile:
Marlin Brackett: The Key Song on his CD out of Atlanta, GA... you can buy it at http://cdbaby.com/cd/marlinbrackett . Man this makes me miss home. Look for him at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, on Google, or at Fiddler's Grove. Reminds me of dad and home.

Ben Harper Like a King on the "Welcome the the Cruel World" CD, amoung many others of course...so talented. This entire CD... genius. The Wiesenboard he plays and now manufactures and sells out of Claremont, California. An activist version of what my dad did growing up. Perfect.
