I wrote this song when I was listening to a lot of Bringing It All Back Home, right before Dylan went electric. He was writing these highway accidents where the images would just pile on top of each other, layer upon layer he was just moving too fast for people to catch up. In Dont Look Back, the Pennebaker film, theres a video of him right before Newport where hes just rushing through his acoustic stuff, like its relevance is just slipping through his fingers as he's singing - in a rambling introduction he says, This ones called Its Alright Ma (Im Only Bleeding) - Ho Ho Ho. So thats where the title comes from.
